November, Late spring, is summer veg planting time for those who live in the colder part of our cool/cold climate region. Even those of you who live in the warmer parts such as the Southern Highlands would have only risked planting out tomatoes in mid to late October due to very cool overnight temperatures and frost in many places. With the risk of frost very low (except for Cooma and Alpine areas) planting out all our favourite summer vegetables; tomato, cucumber, corn, peppers, basil, eggplant, beans, basil begins in earnest. Potatoes can be planted again now even if you started a crop in October.
This month can be a very exciting one in the garden. The garlic harvest begins as bulbs form and mature and we anticipate the first taste of new season garlic. We are pulling garlic scapes & putting them in everything! We are panting out lovely leafy green lettuce seedlings too, and rows of red and white radishes and Asian turnip seeds for the Christmas table to offer colourful, delicious salads during Christmas week and beyond.
Think of all the quick growing veg that you can use to brighten up your Christmas dishes: Spring onions, rocket, mustard greens, choy joi and bok choy, and baby beetroot too. Put aside a few pots or a square metre of ground and grow them all together as your Noel Garden. Use companion planting ideas – put the spring onions with the beetroot and surround them with a mix of everything else for maximum growing synergy.
Enjoy Your Christmas!
