Open day 5

Domesticated Farm Animals

All farm animals (sheep, cattle, horses, alpaca, pigs, chooks, ducks, geese, turkeys…) are all domesticated livestock that humans have been working with and farming for food and fibre for centuries. They are dependent on us for their life and well being. We must respect them and ensure that they have lives that reflect the highest possible standard of animal welfare. Yes, this is where we take a stand for the welfare of our farm animals.

Keeping Healthy Hens

We run an on-farm four hour class for you to help with providing the best care for your flock so you get the best eggs or meat and ensure that your birds are happy and healthy, living a great life!  Check the times and dates this class in offered  RIGHT HERE!

Monkittee Mash- A complete Food.

At Wynlen House we consider how you raise, feed and care for your animals is vitally important. This is a basic tenets of animal husbandry. All animals Should be raised with respect and care.  This does not mean that they are treated as pets but it does mean that they should be treated well; care about what they eat, their health, their welfare, their housing and their home.  An animal that lives a happy healthy life will provide quality food.
Monkittee Mash for poultry is a grain, protein and greens rich, laying mash that meets the daily nutritional requirements of your laying hens or other poultry.  Our poultry (and pig mash) is GMO Soy free.  See Soy the Hidden Factor.
We make our own poultry mash, “Monkittee Mash”, using meat meal rather than using commercial feeds which mostly contain GMO soy imported for the stock feed industry. Meat meal is a product originally used by farmers when they made their own feeds before the pelleted stock feed manufacturing industry came along. We use these original formulae to make our poultry rations and show you have to do the same in our short online course “Make your Own Layer Mash.”

Poultry Feeding & Nutrition

All breeds of Poultry are Omnivores, they eat food of both plant and animal origin. Their digestive systems are designed for more concentrated type foods than ruminants (grass eaters).  As poultry are not ruminants they do not do well on pasture alone. Their stomachs are not designed to cope with course bulky, fibrous [grains. Poultry need a mix of ground and whole grains and protein preferably from an animal source.  Monkittee Mash made on the farm, provides this mix and is usually served to hens in the morning. It is fed as a wet mash (small amounts of water added to the dry mix to create a crumbly texture) so that the birds can pick up individual whole grains mixed with milled grain and chaff. So just as with organic gardening you need vigorous healthy soil so that you have vigorous healthy plants, we also believe you need vigorous, healthy, happy poultry to raise healthy eggs & meat.

To sustain health birds need to be fed a diet that meets their nutritional needs and maintains healthy gut biology.  Incorporating minerals into their diet, principally dolomite, seaweed meal, sulphur, and copper will contribute to a healthy gut. Pat Colby, was one of the pioneers of natural farming in Australia, pioneering the benefits of minerals in animal husbandry. Her books are well worth a read. We use her mineral supplement regime for our birds which also helps to resist disease. Order here Mineral Mix Here.

Monkittee Mash is available directly from Wynlen House, Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands and is delivered regularly to Braidwood.  Please note: Monkittee Mash is not suitable for posting.
