Come and visit our small permaculture urban farm in the picturesque, historic village of Bundanoon in the beautiful Southern Highlands on NSW.  Learn the secret of happy, healthy hens! It is all in the bespoke, nutritionally balanced feed we make  - the formulea for which which we are sharing in this on-farm short class. We'll show you how to use the formulea, make the feed to meet the bird's optimal nutritional needs. You get to take home a sample of the feed so you can see how your hens just love it.

Meeting the nutritional needs of your hens is an important aspect of their welfare. Your chooks need excellent nutrition to ensure they are happy and healthy and to make delicious, nutrient dense eggs or meat. Do you find, when you feed scratch mixes that birds will ignore many of the grains and seeds used in these mixes? Have you ever wondered what's in a chook pellet? It might be convenient like most fast foods, but is it healthy? Can we do better? Yes, and for a lower cost too. This mash currently feeds our egg laying flock and our meat chickens which we grow in batches of 30 a few times a year. This mash, especially formulated for water fowl, also feed to swans, geese and ducks at the Canberra Zoo and Aquarium.

Pellets are the fast food poultry feed.  Fast, easy, some are nutrient deficient but useful on occasion. Unfortunately most poultry keepers rely on pelleted feeds.  Before stockfeed manufactures introduced pellets, poultry feed was a whole grain and ground grain dry feed ration that you mixed with la chaff for greens and water to make a mash. Pellets originate as this dry feed ration, then it goes through further processing using steam and pressure to heat the ingredients. This mixture is then compressed and extruded into pellets. This may make the feed more convenient for the poultry keeper but does not necessarily improve the quality of the ration for your hens.

What you will learn
We will show you how to simply make your own adult chicken mash from ingredients commonly available at Rural or Stock Feed stores. There are two straight forward formulae used in the making of the rations. Both are explained via video with downloadable worksheets for practice. The use of both formulae mean you can vary your feed to take advantage of ingredient availability and prices. The class also addresses nutrition and health helping poultry keepers understand the vital impact nutrition has on the well being and disease resistance of poultry.
